Tiffany Owens is a system safety engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.

She is one of 5,700 scientists and engineers in the organization. The division is part of the Naval Surface Warfare Centers under the Naval Sea Systems Command.

Tiffany is a 1998 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. She earned a bachelor’s degree in microelectronics engineering and joined Dahlgren in 2009. Before that, she was a product reliability engineer at a memory company.

Dahlgren conducts research in systems-related areas and scientific disciplines including physics, mathematics, laser and computer technology, software, mechanical, electrical and systems engineering, and biotechnology and chemistry.

Dahlgren technology is critical to new design concepts for current ships and for systems integration for the U.S. Navy.

Dahlgren scientists and engineers share their expertise by participating in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities and other programs that inspire local youth to pursue careers in technical disciplines.

Dahlgren mentors support summer academies where they introduce robotics and basic engineering principles to area middle and high school students through hands-on activities.

Tiffany has been active in the Metro Richmond Science Fair, the FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Robotics Competition. She also volunteers for STEM activities at Richmond and Henrico Public Schools.

She is a committee chair and volunteer for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was the vision of nine college students on the campus of Howard University in 1908. Since then, the sorority has flourished into an organization of over 290,000 members empowered by a commitment to servant-leadership.

Tiffany has been recognized for her technical and community contributions through numerous awards including the Naval Surface Warfare Center Distinguished Community Service Award, Richmond Joint Engineer’s Council Community Service Award, BEYA Modern-Day Technology Leaders program, and the University of Buffalo Science Technology Enrichment Program Graduates Excelling in Milestones of Success Award.

Through the years, Dahlgren has established itself as a testing area for naval guns and ammunition. The Dahlgren Division is named after Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. It was initially established 16 October 1918 and will mark its 100th birthday in 2018.
