An eleventh annual survey by US Black Engineer & Information Technology (USBE&IT) magazine has revealed the corporate and government organizations that are considered most supportive of the nation’s historically Black engineering schools.
Participants in the “Top Supporter” survey were the deans of the 14 ABET-accredited, historically Black college and university (HBCU) engineering programs, and the corporate-academic alliance, Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE). The survey asked the deans to list the ten corporate and ten government or non-profit organizations that provide the most support to their schools.
Tyrone Taborn, editor in chief of USBE&IT magazine and chairman and CEO of the magazine’s publisher, Career Communications Group, Inc., says, “Doing this survey for the eleventh consecutive time, we are consistently finding many organizations that are doing their fair share in building the STEM pipeline. This survey reflects the perception that the deans and AMIE share about the level of support that their institutions receive from corporations, which is very important information for our readers to know. Black students and professionals want to know what these organizations are doing for their colleges because they want to work for employers that are committed to their community.”
Companies named as 2013 Top Supporters of HBCUs will be recognized at the Top Supporters of HBCUs Dinner, which will feature a tribute to the engineering dean of Morgan State University, Dr. Eugene DeLoatch. The dinner will be held on June, 1, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Baltimore, MD.
“Dr. DeLoatch has always been one of my mentors and helped me co-found the BEYA STEM Conference,” said Taborn. “He is one of the most outstanding leaders in engineering that we have and has continued to work to expand the engineering pipeline in this country.”
On the corporate side, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corporation and The Boeing Company received the highest number of votes from the committee. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headed the government and non-profit list followed closely by NASA, U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), U.S. Army Research Lab, and the U.S. Department of Energy.
