On May 1, 2006, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich will officially recognize Maryland’s first National Teacher of the Year, Kimberly Oliver, a kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres Elementary School in Montgomery County. Governor Ehrlich will share her education platform with Maryland media members at a reception at the State House.
Nominees considered for this prestigious award must inspire students of all backgrounds; show respect and admiration for students, parents, and colleagues; and, play an active role in the community and school. State superintendent of schools, Nancy S. Grasmick, said, “Kimberly’s school, Broad Acres Elementary, is one that experienced many challenges … . She has demonstrated that it is possible to significantly boost student achievement school-wide for students from every background.” As the 2006 National Teacher of the Year, Oliver will serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the teaching profession, making approximately 150 speeches and visits and serving on commissions and policy-advising boards.
Prior to her six-year career in education, Oliver graduated magna cum laude from Hampton University with a degree in English Arts and then attended Wilmington College to receive a master's degree in elementary education.
