Evan Paul, chemical engineering major and waste management certificate candidate at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, has been selected as the first O’Brien & Gere Scholar. The engineering and project delivery company awarded the interdisciplinary Waste Management Institute (WMI) of North Carolina A&T $10,000 to support Paul during his junior and senior years. The company will also provide him with an environmental internship.

Internships are tailored to meet sponsor needs and cover facets of the environmental profession, from resource conservation to hazardous waste management, public policy, environmental education, community sustainability, and climate change.

WMI’s mission is to enhance awareness and understanding of global waste management and develop programs needed to improve the quality of life and protect the environment. More than 800 students have successfully completed the interdisciplinary program since 1995 when the Waste Management Certificates were implemented.

Since 1990, the Environmental Careers Organization -- a non-profit organization that develops professionals for the environmental field through internships that provide professional, on-the-job learning experiences for students -- has been addressing the critical need to increase diversity in the environmental field and help create career opportunities for underrepresented populations who have not traditionally explored this area.  In 2002, the Environmental Careers Organization selected WMI as the winner of the National Environmental Excellence Award in academic programming and diversity.

O’Brien & Gere's partnership with N.C. A&T’s WMI began in May 2006. In February 2007, the American Council of Engineering Companies’ Maryland chapter awarded O’Brien & Gere “The Outstanding Project in the Environmental Category.” This award is the result of work completed on the almost 60-year old Patuxent Water Filtration Plant in Laurel, Maryland.

Black Technology

A virtual spokesperson for black technology, BlackEngineer aspires to serve as leading news and information provider on the advancements in black technology with deep insights into black engineering, black entrepreneurs, black education, and historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). In fact, BlackEngineer is one of the very few to promote the achievements of black technology. The Black engineer of the year awards (BEYA) is one of our successful ventures to promote black technology, progress and achievements made in black technology, and the sentiments of the Black community in the US, the UK, Caribbean, and Africa.

Black Entrepreneurs

Black technology entrepreneurs are increasingly providing the horsepower that drives the global economy. Over the last two decades, black entrepreneurs have created more jobs, and contributed much more to the economic expansion of the Black community as a whole, than any black pastor or politician. Black entrepreneurs are taking risks and building businesses that generate economic growth and increase prosperity in underserved areas, as more minority-owned and minority-focused businesses emerge, willing to serve the financial needs of Black entrepreneurs. US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine's annual list of Top Black Technology Entrepreneurs reflects the expanding scope of leading Black entrepreneurs in information technology, homeland security, and defense.
