Career Communications Group Publisher and CEO Tyrone Taborn has been selected to be part of HistoryMakers. When completed this landmark oral video collection of first-person narratives will spotlight accomplishments of 5,000 African Americans in many disciplines and showcase key players in black-led national organizations. HistoryMakers will be the single largest archival project of its kind.
Tyrone Taborn says, "The opportunity to add my words and thoughts to such an august assemblage is both an honor and a humbling experience. We all stand on the shoulders of our ancestors and our hope is that we will measure up to their courage and commitment to advancing African America."
Unlike existing oral history collections which consist largely of cassette interviews, the History Makers will be available online. The digital archive will be accessible to Library of Congress, the Schomburg Library, and colleges nationwide.
Not since the 1930s, when the Federal Writers' Project collected authentic oral testimony and narratives of ex-slaves about life during slavery, has this type of project been attempted to document the lives of prominent African Americans. Even though blacks have made significant contributions to American life, the world is largely unaware of their significance or of the many personal stories of life in African America.
At present, The HistoryMakers archive contains nearly 1,600 first-person interviews that have been conducted since the organization’s inception in 1999. By sharing these stories, the founders of the HistoryMakers hope to enrich the lives of all ethnic groups.
When Bob Ingram, associate publisher of VIBE magazine, who began his publishing career at Career Communications Group, heard of Taborn’s selection he said, “This is good news for Baltimore's business community. It is also great news for the science, engineering, technology, advertising, marketing and the HBCU communities. Tyrone has been a stalwart contributor to many individual causes and industries for more than 20 years. It is about time that the recognition he has long received nationally is paid to him in his own back yard.”
