Roy Perry, one of 100 innovative men and women named to USBE&IT magazine’s 2005 Most Important Blacks in Technology list, delivered the annual commencement address to Prairie View A&M University's fall class on Dec. 8. This year's graduates join more than 50,000 alumni who have graduated from the school during its 131-year history.

Engineering pioneer, philanthropist and Prairie View alumnus Roy Perry (Class of 1978) known for his generosity to Prairie View and other organizations, holds an industry record for the notable 62-day startup of Dell's Nashville production facility. Dell, StorageTek, AlliedSignal (Honeywell) and IBM have all garnered substantial cost savings and improved business processes as a result of Perry's shrewd application of industry best practices.

Roy Perry currently serves as chairman for Spirit Logistics. Perry's 20-year operations career has been marked by his keen ability to facilitate operational turn around in record times.

Roy Perry received the Black Engineer of the Year Award -- Professional Achievement in Industry category in 2003. In a recent interview with USBE&IT magazine, Perry said that he believes professional achievement is about more than degrees and career success. Perry believes in giving back, and he has been active in giving back to organizations that help minority students, including organizations as Youth About Business, the Leadership and Enrichment through the Arts Program (LEAP), United Negro College Fund (UNCF), and Iowa State University and Prairie View A&M, where he served as technical advisor to strengthen their engineering curriculums.

At the commencement ceremony, Prairie View conferred nearly 600 degrees from nine schools. New college graduates, along with their families, friends and supporters gathered in the William "Billy" J. Nicks Sr. Building on the university's main campus to receive their degrees. "Always take Prairie View with you," said Perry, who is serving PVAMU on the university's capital campaign committee, which is set to raise $30 million.

Black Technology

A virtual spokesperson for black technology, BlackEngineer aspires to serve as leading news and information provider on the advancements in black technology with deep insights into black engineering, black entrepreneurs, black education, and historically black colleges and universities (HBCU). In fact, BlackEngineer is one of the very few to promote the achievements of black technology. The Black engineer of the year awards (BEYA) is one of our successful ventures to promote black technology, progress and achievements made in black technology, and the sentiments of the Black community in the US, the UK, Caribbean, and Africa.

Black Entrepreneurs

Black technology entrepreneurs are increasingly providing the horsepower that drives the global economy. Over the last two decades, black entrepreneurs have created more jobs, and contributed much more to the economic expansion of the Black community as a whole, than any black pastor or politician. Black entrepreneurs are taking risks and building businesses that generate economic growth and increase prosperity in underserved areas, as more minority-owned and minority-focused businesses emerge, willing to serve the financial needs of Black entrepreneurs. US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine's annual list of Top Black Technology Entrepreneurs reflects the expanding scope of leading Black entrepreneurs in information technology, homeland security, and defense.
