Southern University Summer Transportation Institute

Southern University’s College of Engineering will hold three summer programs for middle and high school students during the months of June and July.

Southern University Transportation Institute, open to students in 9th – 11th grade will run from June 1 – June 26 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. It is designed to create an awareness of the opportunities in the transportation industry and stimulate interest in students. 

The institute will consist of academic, enhancement and recreational programs.  The academic program will introduce participants to land, air and water transportation and covers the topics of design, planning and safety. There will also be weekly fieldtrips to enforce what is learned in the classroom. The enhancement program will cover time management, study habits, ACT prep, computer and oral communication skills. The recreational program will include basketball, swimming, bowling and volleyball.

This program is free to students who have completed or qualified to enroll in Algebra II, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus or Advanced Math in the Fall of 2008, have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale and have an interest in engineering, environment sciences, technology, transportation, architecture, urban affairs or public policy.  The deadline to apply is May 5.

Science, Engineering and Technology Camp

This camp is for middle school students in grades 6-8.  It will offer interactive, hands-on science and technology experiences for students in a laboratory environment.  Students will participate in classes and labs in robotics, engineering and computer programming.  There will be activities including swimming, sports, aerobics, music and arts and crafts in the afternoon. 

The four week camp will run from June 8 – July 3 from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. To register, students must submit a completed registration form, a copy of their current grades, a letter of recommendation from a current teacher and a $300 non-refundable registration fee to:

Engineering Summer Institute

This summer institute seeks to expose students in 9-12 grades to career opportunities in engineering, science and mathematics.  The goal of ESI is to broaden the access of students to these careers by exposing them to available options in an environment that facilitates intellectual exchange, academic enrichment and fosters the learning, sharing, and growing processes.  The four week camp will run from June 8 – July 3 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. Every Friday will be reserved for field trips to industry facilities. To attend, students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, submit an official transcript, standardized test scores, a letter of recommendation from a current math or science teacher, a 250 word essay and a $300 non-refundable registration fee to:
