MIT Race, Pharmaceuticals, and Medical Technology Conference

Experts drawn from clinical research, nursing, sociology, anthropology, and history will discuss drugs like BiDil -- the first medication approved and marketed for treating diseases of specific racial and ethnic groups -- at a major conference on the promises and pitfalls of new racial therapeutics in medicine. The MIT Race, Pharmaceuticals, and Medical Technology Conference will be held Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, 2006 at the MIT Faculty Club. Topics for discussion will include minority populations on trial, histories of racial therapeutics, race in the market place and law, commerce, and racial drugs. Troy Duster, a sociologist who has actively mentored more than 65 Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Native American Ph.D. students, will give the keynote address: "The Molecular Reinscription of Race.”
