Working Their Way Through College: Student Employment and its Impact on the College Experience

Working while enrolled is perhaps the most common major activity for nearly 80 per cent of America’s diverse undergraduate population of 16 million students, says a new brief from the American Council on Education. Students spend 30 hours per week at their jobs and most of them work in jobs that are not connected to their academic program or, in many cases, to their career goals. For many students, research has shown that working more than 20 hours per week tends to detract from the academic experience and jeopardize successful completion of a degree or certificate.
