Hewlett-Packard Company and the Magic Johnson Foundation opened their 15th "Inventor Center" recently in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Bladensburg, Md. The two organizations are pooling their resources to bring technology training centers to underserved minority communities.

'OR of the Future' Opens in Baltimore

The University of Maryland Medical Center's new operating rooms combine advanced technology and design to enhance patient safety and medical efficiency. In addition to providing improved health care for the community, the new ORs will serve as a test site for U.S. Army operating room technology.

The Baltimore Digital Village program celebrated its second anniversary last week. The program, funded and supported in large part by Hewlett-Packard Company, is designed to help create an "e-living" culture in which technology is available to everyone for learning, working, and playing.

CTCNet Annual Tech Conference Set for D.C.

Community Technology Centers' Network (CTCNet) will hold its 12th Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., on June 27–29, with help from Hewlett-Packard Company, AOL Time Warner Foundation, Ford Foundation, Tech Foundation, the Alliance for Technology Access, and the Association for Community Networking. Titled "Creating Our Future: Shaping the Agenda of Community Technology," the conference will seek to engage community technology practitioners in public policy advocacy and define a clear path forward during a time of uncertainty in the field.

BDPA Richmond Gets Grant for Student Training

The Richmond Chapter of Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) has been awarded a $15,000 grant by The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia. The grant will help the chapter's High School Computer Competition program, which now is training 40 students in information technology.

Over the last two decades, black entrepreneurs have created more jobs, and contributed much more to the economic expansion of the Black community as a whole, than any black pastor or politician. Black entrepreneurs are taking risks and building businesses that generate economic growth and increase prosperity in underserved areas, as more minority-owned and minority-focused businesses emerge, willing to serve the financial needs of Black entrepreneurs. US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine's annual list of Top Black Technology Entrepreneurs reflects the expanding scope of leading Black entrepreneurs in information technology, homeland security, and defense.
