When Admiral Michael G. Mullen is confirmed as chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, and there is little doubt that won't happen, observers says
that the successor to Gen. Peter Pace brings experience, intellectual heft, and a
pragmatist's broad view to the job of the nation's senior military
advisor.
The 1968 Naval Academy grad has deep blue water and onshore
credentials. He rose quickly through the ranks after getting his first sea command as a lieutenant and currently holds the Navy's
highest job, chief of naval operations.
Along the way, he also earned
master's degrees, one in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate
School and another from Harvard Business School. He is also said to have forged
a close relationship with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, which will be key
as the pair consider the nation's military options in Iraq.
When asked
about the appointment, Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), the chairman of the Senate Armed
Services Committee told the New York Times recently that Admiral Mullen is
"well-qualified."
