Morgan State University Names New President

The Morgan State University Board of Regents today announced that Dr. David Wilson has been named the University’s 12th president. With over 31 years of higher education experience under his belt, Dr. Wilson comes to Morgan having been the first chancellor in Wisconsin’s history to lead two University of Wisconsin institutions simultaneously.  He is currently chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension. 

Prior to his present position, Dr. Wilson served in numerous capacities, from vice president to faculty and administrative roles, at Rutgers University, Kentucky State University, Radcliffe College, Auburn University and Tuskegee University.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree in political science and a Master of Education degree from Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and earned a second Ed.M. in Educational Planning and Administration and a Doctorate in Administration, Planning and Social Policy, both from Harvard University.

A presidential search committee, appointed by the Board of Regents of Morgan State University, completed its initial search in November, when committee members presented a list of three finalists to the full board. Each of the finalists visited Morgan’s campus and made presentations to faculty, staff, students and administrators before the list was pared to one finalist whose name was announced today.

Dallas R. Evans, chairman of the MSU Board of Regents, describes Dr. David Wilson as a good match for the University.  “Morgan has experienced phenomenal growth under the leadership of President Richardson and we were looking for someone who could continue that momentum.  We believe Dr. Wilson is the person who can take us to the next level of excellence and productivity.”

Dr. Wilson is expected to begin his new role as president of Morgan State University on July 1, 2010.  He takes over from Dr. Earl S. Richardson, who announced last fall his intention to resign after 25 years as president, effective December 31 but at the request of the Board of Regents, will remain until June 30, 2010.
