Much of the nation’s science establishment breathed a sigh of relief when, just before taking office, President Obama named physicist John P. Holdren to be his top science advisor. After eight years of the Bush administration, which was widely accused of subordinating hard scientific facts to the whims of politics, Holdren was seen as someone who would make things right. Recently, he sat down for an interview with USBE&IT magazine to talk about global warming, energy insecurity, nuclear weapons proliferation—and science and public policy.

Army Chief of Engineers talks to USBE Online
Following on from the annual U. S. Army Corps of Engineers workshop at the 23rd Black Engineer of the Year STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in February, Lieutenant General Robert L. Van Antwerp, Jr. talked by phone to USBE Online today. The chief of engineers of the United States Army spoke about, among other things, the more than 200 resumes collected by the Corps’ recruiters at the BEYA Career Fair. Twenty-eight job offers were made. The Corps now boasts 18 new employees

Benjamin S. Carson Sr., a Johns Hopkins Children's Center neurosurgeon, received the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in a White House ceremony on June 19. Read an archive USBE interview, where Dr. Carson shares his thoughts about his career and service to community. "I'd say everybody has obstacles in his life; there's no question about that. And you can either come up to that obstacle and say, "My gosh! There is a containing fence," and sit down and pout, or you can walk up to that obstacle and say, "It looks like a hurdle. I'm going to jump over it."
