The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has released its 2023 Civil Engineering Salary Report which shows that salaries for civil engineers have continued to rise at a faster rate than in previous years, with a median pre-tax income from all sources of $128,000.
Base salaries have increased by approximately 7% from 2022 to 2023. The report also highlights that those civil engineers with a Professional Engineers license have a median primary income of $132,000, which is nearly $30,000 more than those without licenses or certifications.
The report also showed that job satisfaction is high among civil engineers, with 66.3% of respondents being satisfied or very satisfied with their financial compensation, up from 63.3% in the previous year.
The number was even higher when respondents were asked about their overall job satisfaction, with 86.7% stating they were satisfied or very satisfied with their jobs. The report also highlighted the opportunities for career growth in 2023.
The ASCE President, Maria C. Lehman commented that the current workforce crisis has created a great demand for civil engineers that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states will continue for the next decade.
Given the age and condition of much of the infrastructure, along with the additional funding being brought to bear, the demand will continue.
More than nine in 10 respondents receive health insurance benefits through their employer, and nearly 76% are offered telework options – an increasingly desired employee benefit since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, more than two-thirds of survey respondents said they were very satisfied or satisfied with the advancement opportunities afforded by their workplace.
The ASCE Civil Engineering Salary Report is released every fall, collected from responses of Society members about their jobs and financial compensation. This year's report is derived from over 3,200 member responses.
ASCE is America's oldest national engineering society, founded in 1852, and represents over 150,000 civil engineers worldwide.
ASCE works to raise awareness of the need to maintain and modernize the nation's infrastructure using sustainable and resilient practices, advocates for increasing and optimizing investment in infrastructure and improves engineering knowledge and competency.
