aSTEAM Village, an education center in Kansas and host of the Kansas City, STEM City USA metaverse, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a series of events.
Dedicated to preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM), aSTEAM has planned several summer fundraisers to support the aSTEAM Village-National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Jr. Chapter's 2024-2025 robotics and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) campaigns.
The goal is to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators.
In partnership with GEAR UP Kansas City, a program at the University of Kansas (KU), aSTEAM will present the KU GEAR UP STEM Jeopardy Challenge: Digital Literacy Edition.
This event will feature four teams of 2024 high school graduates from Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools competing in two STEM Jeopardy challenges focused on digital literacy.
The students will compete for a total of $4,000 in scholarship money, with the two winning teams each receiving a $500 Edward Dwight, Jr. Scholarship.
Edward Joseph Dwight Jr. is a former test pilot and astronaut. He is the first African American to have entered the Air Force program from which NASA selected astronauts. He was controversially not chosen to join NASA officially.
The STEM Jeopardy Challenge provides the opportunity for students to showcase their skills after completing STEM Village digital literacy certifications, which earned them a free laptop before entering college or starting a job.
There are also $500 scholarships available for sixteen students with IC3 Digital Literacy Global Standard 5 (GS5) certificates earned through KU GEAR UP.
These courses cover concepts and skills that apply to almost any school or career pathway, making them ideal for any student or jobseeker looking to validate their digital skills.
aSTEAM Village has also partnered with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Kansas City Section to host a STEM Day.
The ASCE Kansas City Section is dedicated to advancing the field of civil engineering and supporting the professional development of its members through community outreach and educational initiatives.
