Dr. Joann Powell is a researcher at Clark Atlanta's Center for Cancer Research. One of several academics at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) who made presentations at the annual Leading Voices event during the BEYA STEM Conference in February, Powell's topic is the role of biomedical researchers in combating cancer health disparities

Retired Army Gen. William "Kip" Ward is a decorated officer, and member of the External Research Advisory Panel of the Division of Research and Development at Morgan State University, his alma mater. Ward served as the inaugural commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), where he established the nation’s newest and uniquely positioned interagency combatant command.
