When a Career Communications Group magazine named Shirley Mahaley Malcom one of The 50 Most Important Blacks in Research Science, she had been an advocate for access to science careers for decades.
Dr. Malcom is coauthor of the landmark 1970s academic paper "The Double Bind: The Price of Being a Minority Woman in Science."
Since writing that seminal report, Malcom has flown around the world opening doors, run a graduate scholars program, and driven creation of a Black professoriate by financing Ph.D.-level education for science graduates.
Another program reached into the foundation of the Black community, the churches, recognizing many were running ad-hoc after-school tutoring programs.
Dr. Malcom raised the bar by providing tutor training, help in strengthening their curricular focus, and new materials.
This week, U.S. News & World Report has named Malcom a STEM Solutions Hall of Fame honoree.
In choosing the honorees, U.S. News sought out leaders who have "achieved measurable results in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields; challenged established processes and conventional wisdom; inspired a shared vision; and motivated legions of aspiring STEM professionals."
The STEM Solutions Hall of Fame has been announced in advance of the 2015 U.S. News STEM Solutions conference, which will be held June 29-July 1 in San Diego.
Shirley Malcom is head of education and human resources programs at AAAS. She works to improve the quality and increase access to education and careers in STEM fields as well as to enhance public science literacy.
The 2015 Stem Solutions Hall of Fame honorees include, Craig Barrett, Eduardo Padrón, Shirley Malcom, Maria Klawe and Stephen Bechtel Jr.
