Virginia State University was named "HBCU of the Year" at the Historically Black College and University Awards. The ceremony was hosted June 22 by HBCU Digest, an online blog founded by Jarrett Carter Sr., a 2003 graduate of Morgan State University.
Virginia State’s Board of Visitors also received the 2018 "HBCU Best Board of Trustees Award" and VSU freshman Brianna Bundick-Kelly, whose fun dance video went viral, was named the "Female Student of the Year."
For the 2016 fall semester, Virginia State welcomed more than 1,000 freshmen. The Class of 2020 represented a 30 percent increase from the 2015 freshman class.
Recently, the National Science Foundation awarded Virginia State University a $3 million grant to work with school districts in Petersburg, Richmond, New Orleans and Philadelphia to increase the number of minority students entering college with the skills to be able to pursue a major and career in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
