Vice Adm. Anthony L. Winns (USN, Ret.) assumed Chairmanship of the BEYA Stars and Stripes Committee on July 1. He succeeds Vice Adm. Walt Davis who has guided BEYA Stars and Stripes over the past eight years.
BEYA Stars and Stripes is an integral part of the annual BEYA STEM Conference. Since the founding members held the first breakfast event during the three-day conference seventeen years ago, the veteran group of Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) winners has honored a growing line of service members at a dinner held to mark Black History Month and National Engineers Week in February.
The committee also presents awards to student winners of various science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) scholarships.
In an email to committee members and the BEYA Stars and Stripes community, Winns thanked VADM Davis for his leadership. "Walt deftly guided BEYA Stars and Stripes to its greatest heights over the past eight years," Winns said. "His laser focus on the BEYA Stars and Stripes mission, while leaning forward in the straps with new impactful initiatives are examples, I will continue to emulate."
During his eight-year tenure, Davis co-founded the BEYA Stars and Stripes Capstone. He also founded BEYA Stars and Stripes Career Day and originated the global health security seminar series at Career Communications Group (CCG) events.
Davis is also co-founder of the BEYA Stars and Stripes Sustained Mentoring Program and led the implementation of the Stars and Stripes BEYA digital twin experience (DTX), and integration of BEYA Stars and Stripes into the Career Communications Group (CCG) STEM City USA metaverse
"I also want to thank CCG CEO Tyrone Taborn and [BEYA Stars and Stripes] Chairman Emeritus General Johnnie Wilson for their leadership and unparalleled support during this transition planning process and over the years," Winn wrote in the email. I have worked side-by-side with Dr. Taborn, Gen. Wilson and VADM Davis since we started BEYA Stars & Stripes more than 17 years ago. I could not be prouder of the course set by these visionary leaders," he said.
Continuing in his letter, Winn noted his appreciation for the contributions of every member to the BEYA Stars and Stripes Mission. "I intend to maintain a steady course and will need your continued support to make our BEYA SS Committee even better."
