Usang is a Tier ⅔ technical expert at AT&T. His role includes working on emerging technologies in conjunction with AT&T Labs, third-party vendors, and internal teams to test new technology concepts needed to deliver state-of-the-art processes/procedures that must be rolled out to production engineers in the U.S. and the Czech Republic. Usang's technical expertise and out-of-the-box ideas have contributed to AT&T's ability to deliver innovative customer solutions, especially in the area of 5G technologies. Usang also volunteers to share his skills tutoring at-risk youth.
Last fall, Usang was named the winner of the 2022 Dr. James W. Mitchell Legacy Award. Mitchell is the 1993 Black Engineer of the Year, the seventh person to win this prestigious award. At the time, Mitchell was department head of analytical chemistry at Bell Laboratories. As one of the founders of a Black laboratory employee resource group, Mitchell chaired the lab’s affirmative action committee. Usang will receive his award at the 2022 BEYA STEM Conference in February.
