North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has announced that James Martin II, a civil engineer with experience in leading engineering and STEM initiatives at large public research universities, has been elected as chancellor by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.
Martin's appointment will commence on Aug. 15.
He has a wealth of experience as an engineering professor, institute director, and dean, having served at prominent public universities such as Clemson University and Virginia Tech.
During his tenure as the U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering at Pittsburgh's Swanson School of Engineering, he significantly bolstered the engineering program, improving research funding, fostering strategic partnerships, and enhancing diversity, enrollment, and graduation rates.
Martin is recognized as a leading scholar in disaster risk engineering and earthquake science, and his research has contributed to the development of more resilient building codes in the United States.
Additionally, he has provided engineering consulting to numerous firms and government agencies worldwide.
Martin holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The Citadel, as well as a master's and doctorate in civil engineering from Virginia Tech.
His awards and recognitions include the prestigious Norman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers and induction into the Virginia Tech Department of Civil Engineering's Academy of Distinguished Alumni in 2015.
