Tech companies have been reporting their Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) data and diversity statistics for almost 3 years now. What’s changed?
This week, a black female CEO launched a system that will enable tech companies to use data in finding out just where bias happens.
Stephanie Lampkin is founder and CEO of Blendoor, which believes data, analytics, transparency, and accountability will be the driving force behind the push toward skills-based hiring.
Blendoor hiring technology aims to reduce unconscious bias by hiding data that's not relevant and highlighting data that is.
The scoring system measures how well tech companies are recruiting, retaining, and promoting women and underrepresented minorities in the technology workforce, by rating tech companies on bias, diversity and inclusion.
“My thesis is behavior change and prioritization will happen through data, transparency, and accountability,” Lampkin says. “We’re ready to peel back the onion.”
BlendScore beta, launched Sunday, has rated 138 technology companies based on the demographics of the leadership team, retention statistics and strategies, recruiting practices, bias, and social impact initiatives. Data is pulled from publicly available information, survey responses, and the Blendoor Bias Index (BBI).
“You can think of BBI like an ‘unconscious bias credit score.’” Lampkin explains. “BBI is a proprietary, real-time bias analytics technology that measures a company’s bias in hiring, compensation, promotion, and communication based on data collected from various IT systems.”
According to the company’s website information, Blendoor has a database of over 10,000 candidates (68% women, 40% Black, Latino, Native American, 26% technical) seeking to match with companies that prioritize equity, diversity AND inclusion.
Blendoor captures candidate data from companies existing applicant tracking systems and/or online job boards. Candidate profiles are then ‘blendorized’ - displayed without name, photo, or dates to mitigate unconscious bias.
Blendoor collects EEO demographic data to enable talent pipeline analytics based on race, gender, LGBTQ, veteran, and disabled identities.
