The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has a new president.
Robert Berry, a former middle school teacher who was twice named Teacher of the Year in Virginia, began his term at the end of the Council's April 2018 Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C.
The NCTM is a 50,000-member international mathematics education organization.
As president-elect, Berry proposed partnerships with schools, school divisions, communities, and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to and success in improving mathematics learning outcomes.
Berry is a member of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, Benjamin Banneker Association, Mathematics for ALL, American Educational Research Association, Virginia Council for Teachers of Mathematics, Virginia Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and 100 Black Men of America.
“Think of math as a social endeavor,” he said at the NC State Triangle Math Summit when over 900 elementary and secondary school teachers came together for professional development.
Berry earned a bachelor's degree (middle grades education) at Old Dominion University, a master's in mathematics education from Christopher Newport University and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Berry currently teaches mathematics methods courses in the teacher education program at the University of Virginia. He also teaches graduate-level mathematics education courses and courses for teachers seeking a math specialist endorsement.
