11) N.C. A&T students take home a top prize at Sandia’s Senior Design Bonanza (Jun 11, 2020) The team, which was made up of all mechanical engineering students, were outside of their comfort zones but still delivered a working prototype.
12) BEYA-winning educator Oscar Barton named Dean of Morgan State’s School of Engineering (Jun 18, 2020) Dr. Oscar Barton received the College-level Promotion of Education Award at the 2009 BEYA STEM Conference.
13) The Skilled Technical Workforce: Historically Black Colleges and Universities and The Future (Jun 30, 2020) A National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Report expects that 3.4 million jobs will go unfilled by 2022. According to the study, there will be a shortfall of technical workers in jobs that require science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) skills, but do not require a four-year degree.
14) New NSF grant will help develop next-generation scientists (Jul 01, 2020) A $467,080 grant from the National Science Foundation will help fill a workforce void throughout the United States.
15) Distinguished educator will lead the way at The University of California (Jul 08, 2020) Michael V. Drake, M.D. was named president of the University of California, the first Black leader to head America’s top public research university system in 152 years.
16) USBE&IT Deans 2020 (Sep 12, 2020) On the cover of US Black Engineer magazine's back to school edition is a portrait of historically Black college and university (HBCU) engineering deans at the 2020 BEYA STEM Conference.
17) USBE&IT Internship/Back-to-College 2020 (Sep 12, 2020) Read Dr. Pines’s fascinating story in this issue of US Black Engineer magazine, which also features the first-ever list of influential college presidents, provosts, and academic deans.
18) Funeral service held for highly-respected HBCU engineering professor Dr. Gary L. Harris (Nov 06, 2020) Family and friends of the late Dr. Gary L. Harris gathered to pay their respects in a funeral service they shared via webcast. “He will live on because of what he taught others,” the preacher said.
19) Save the date: Each One, Teach One Career Day, Saturday, November 14 (Nov 12, 2020) On Saturday, November 14, Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Stars and Stripes hosted a career day online for young people from kindergarten to 12th grade.
20) BEYA Stars and Stripes winner appointed to Department of Defense transition team (Nov 15, 2020) Retired Navy Adm. Michelle Howard, who received recognition for her service and accomplishments during a recent BEYA Stars and Stripes Dinner in Washington, D.C., has been appointed to President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team to the Department of Defense.
