This week, Anthropic announced a $50 billion investment in American computing infrastructure. The artificial intelligence (AI) startup company has developed a family of large language models (LLMs) named Claude.
According to the press release, the AI company will build data centers in Texas and New York, with more sites to enable continued research and development.
Anthropic projects that the project will create approximately 800 permanent jobs and 2,400 construction jobs, with sites coming online throughout 2026.
It will help advance the goals in the Trump administration’s AI Action Plan to maintain American AI leadership and strengthen domestic technology infrastructure.
“We’re getting closer to AI that can accelerate scientific discovery and help solve complex problems in ways that weren’t possible before. Realizing that potential requires infrastructure that can support continued development at the frontier,” said Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, in the statement. “These sites will help us build more capable AI systems that can drive those breakthroughs, while creating American jobs."
Anthropic serves more than 300,000 business customers. The company said the scale of this investment is necessary to meet the growing demand for Claude from hundreds of thousands of businesses while keeping our research.

This rapid expansion poses sustainability challenges, particularly concerning the combined energy, water, and climate impacts.
The study estimates that deploying AI servers across the United States could lead to an annual water footprint of between 731 million and 1,125 million cubic meters, as well as an increase in carbon emissions of 24 to 44 million tons of CO2-equivalent each year from 2024 to 2030.
These figures depend on the scale of expansion. Additionally, variations in industry efficiency initiatives, rates of grid decarbonization, and the geographical distribution of server locations in the U.S. introduce significant uncertainty in these estimates.
The findings indicate that the AI server industry is unlikely to achieve its net-zero carbon emissions goals by 2030 without a heavy reliance on uncertain carbon offset and water restoration strategies.
