A memorial service for Dr. Lashun Massey was held Thursday in Irving, Texas. Massey (May 27, 1982 – April 29, 2021) joined the High-Tech Sunday podcast a few weeks before Earth Hour 2021 to talk about how she tapped into her boundless, creative power and her commitment to the planet.

Dr. Massey’s interests were the fate and transport of contaminants in environments, remedial strategies for groundwater and soil clean-up, and bioremediation, and enhanced biodegradation. She was a registered professional engineer and owned an engineering firm, Lashun King Environmental Group, PLLC.

High-Tech Sunday’s weekly program is produced by Career Communications Group’s community in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, thought leaders, and aspiring students, to bring a concentrated discussion around technological advancements and achievements based on universal moral principles.

Massey was the reigning Mrs. Dallas, a pageant for married women. She earned a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 2011, after graduating with a master’s in environmental engineering from Tennessee State University in 2006 and a bachelor’s in civil engineering from the same historically Black college and university in 2004.

As an academic, Dr. Massey was committed to promoting scholarly exchange and intellectual discourse on state, national, and international levels. She was a champion for environmental engineering education in under-served and minority communities. She was also nominated by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) to serve as an evaluator for the Engineering Accreditation Commission. She served on expert panels for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research Centers, and NSF Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems.

Massey held a P.E. with the Arkansas State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and was appointed by the state of Arkansas to the Arkansas Drinking Water Advisory and Operator Licensing Committee of the Arkansas Board of Health Little Rock, AR.

Recently, Dr. Massey was featured in US Black Engineer Information Technology magazine and in a chapter on a career-focused book on engineering. She authored her own book, “The Face of the New Engineer” to help motivate and inspire potential students to pursue engineering careers.

Dr. Lashun Massey was formerly project manager for research in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas. She worked as an engineering consultant for many years and served international companies such as Alcoa, Inc. She was badged by the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency to work as a FEMA contractor and held security clearances with the Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security.

During her career, she served as a STEM Center Director at Philander Smith College and coordinator for the Environmental Engineering Program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Dr. Massey also worked as an asst. professor of civil and environmental engineering at Syracuse University and as a hydrologist at the U.S. Geological Survey. She was a mother of two.
