Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors in the Class of 2019 are once again projected to earn top salaries.

According to results of a new survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), bachelor’s degree graduates earning STEM degrees are expected to earn the highest starting salaries.

NACE’s Winter 2019 Salary Survey found that graduates with engineering ($69,188), computer science ($67,539), and math and sciences degrees ($62,177) are projected to be the top paid.

Agriculture and natural resources majors will see the greatest gain in starting salary at 4.1 percent.

With an expected increase of 4.0 percent, engineering majors follow closely behind, while the average salary for computer science majors is anticipated to be 2.3 percent more than their counterparts from the Class of 2018.

Also coming in near the top of the list are business ($57,657) and social sciences ($57,310) majors.

Employers Plan to Increase College Hiring by Almost 17 Percent

Employers expect to hire 16.6 percent more new graduates from the Class of 2019 than they did from the Class of 2018 for positions in the United States, according to results from NACE’s Job Outlook 2019 survey.

This year marks the best initial hiring outlook since the Class of 2007, NACE said. At least 90 percent of employers plan to maintain or increase their hiring.

What Do Employers Want?

Employers responding to the Job Outlook survey also said college students seeking employment after graduation should be sure to craft a well-written resume.

Problem-solving skills and an ability to work as part of a team are also highly desired, said employers participating in the annual NACE Job Outlook survey.  Initiative, analytical skills, and a strong work ethic were also cited by more than 70 percent of respondents as key.
