The next episode of High-Tech Sunday is brought to you by the BEYA STEM Conference, scheduled for February 11-13. The 2021 event is all digital in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The BEYA STEM community serves K-12 students, college students, corporate, government, and military professionals, and employers with three days of learning, networking, and showcasing career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

Retired Lieutenant commander (LCDR) Matt Bowman is a native of Walterboro, South Carolina. The child of an Army officer, he attended schools abroad and across the continental USA, including Thomas Jefferson School for Science and Technology. He left high school early to attend college. A graduate of Florida A&M University, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He went on to flight school in Pensacola, graduating at the top of his class in Primary Flight School, and was selected for the tactical jet pipeline.
LCDR Bowman served at sea for 5 years aboard aircraft carriers. He served ashore at the US Southern Command as the Counterdrug Subject Matter Expert in Narco-Terrorism, where he conducted operations in various South American countries. He was the acting director of diversity for the U.S. Navy and was responsible for diversity policy affecting 338,000 active-duty sailors, 175,000 reservists, and civilians.
Upon retirement in 2011, he returned to Micanopy, Florida. He operated a boutique diversity consulting practice with clients including the Department of Energy, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Education, and other commercial clients.
In 2013, he began work on Micanopy Winery at Countryside Vineyard on a 16-acre parcel in Micanopy, Florida. He was also handpicked as the executive director of the BEYA STEM Conference Stars and Stripes Committee, a group of 12 retired admirals and generals who support BEYA’s mission of creating more engineers in America. In this capacity, Matt works closely with senior leaders from all five services and the National Guard Bureau to build the nation’s STEM capacity.
