US Black Engineer and Information Technology (USBE) magazine has released the 2019 list of top supporters of historically black college and university (HBCU) engineering.
Each year, USBE surveys the deans of the 15 ABET-accredited HBCU engineering schools, and the corporate-academic alliance Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering (AMIE), for the annual “Top Supporters of HBCU Engineering Schools” list.
Veronica Nelson, who was appointed the executive director of AMIE in 2017, spoke on the value proposition and capabilities of AMIE as a rich resource for talent in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
“We must invest in our HBCUs and the strategic and sustainable partnerships that AMIE provides,” she said. HBCUs produce 30 percent of all African American engineers in the country.
Commenting on the top supporters survey, Tyrone D. Taborn, publisher of USBE magazine said “I come to you not only as publisher of a leading magazine that has promoted careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for decades, I’m also a member of AMIE and member of the Morgan State University Board of Regents. I’m proud of the hard work to increase the STEM pipeline and corporate support.”
Taborn said it was an honor to recognize these efforts during Black History Month as organizations move forward into March.
“Everyone on the list is already a winner,” Taborn said. “These ROIs have a lot to show. But the list should be way larger. More companies, federal agencies, and businesses should see the value of these fifteen ABET-accredited engineering schools. We still have a long way to go.”
Dr. Robin Coger, dean of the College of Engineering at North Carolina A&T and chair of the HBCU Council of Engineering Deans, announced the list.
