In 2018, West Point made history with the appointment of the first Black superintendent in its 200-year history. Last week, the U. S. Air Force Academy announced that the U.S. Senate had confirmed Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark as the next superintendent of the Air Force Academy.

President Trump nominated Lt. General Clark to become the Academy’s  superintendent in July.

Clark, a 1986 Academy graduate, will direct the school’s undergraduate academic program, cadet military and athletic training and character development, leading to a bachelor’s degree and a commission as a second lieutenant upon graduation.

“It is a tremendous honor to be confirmed to serve as the next superintendent of the Air Force Academy,” Clark said in a statement. “Knowing that I now have the privilege to build on Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria’s exceptional leadership in educating, training, and inspiring young men and women to become leaders in the Air and Space Forces is truly humbling,” he said.

Clark has served as the Academy’s commandant of cadets and commanded at all levels up to the numbered Air Force. His expertise as a pilot ranges from bomber to air refueling to currently the nuclear enterprise for the Air Force.

“I look forward to once again being part of the institution that has provided me so many opportunities,” he said.
