AOL’s yellow running man ran will finally cross the finish line. The icon, who made it his mission to inform, entertain, and connect the world, is now set to run his last race.

“We’ve made the decision that we will be discontinuing AIM effective December 15, 2017,” said Michael Albers, vice president of communications product for Oath.

Verizon and Yahoo created Oath this summer A big house of more than 50 media and technology brands, including Tumblr, Yahoo! Inc. and AOL, Oath engages more than a billion people around the world.

Instant Messenger’s “You’ve got mail” alerts debuted in 1989 and the rest is history.

As of December 15, 2017, AOL Instant Messenger products and services will be shut down and will no longer work.

“AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed,” Albers added. We are more excited than ever to continue building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products for users around the world.”

On a help page for AIM users, the company said AIM will continue to work until the morning of December 15, 2017. After this date, you will no longer be able to access or sign in to AIM services on any platform.

Oath will begin removing download links prior to December 15, but existing versions will continue to work until December 15.

What happens to my @aim.com email address?

You will still be able to use your @aim.com email address to send and receive an email as usual.

Can you save your Buddy List?

Unfortunately, you are not able to save or export your Buddy List.

What happens to my data?

Your data associated with AIM will be deleted after December 15, 2017.

Can I save my images and files?

Yes, you can manually save images and files to your computer until the morning of December 15, 2017.

Can I view and save my chat history?

Yes, your chat history can be viewed and saved in the versions of AIM below. In some cases, this may depend on whether you previously disabled the option to save a copy of your chats on your computer or if you or your buddy selected the Go off the record option. Chat logs must be saved before December 15, 2017.

After December 15th you will be able to view your saved chat logs by following the steps below. You must have the AIM 8 client installed.
