The Student Leadership Awards at BEYA 2020 took place on February 14th. This year’s event attracted hundreds of students, professors, and people working in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) industry.

Meet Chad Jones, an electrical engineering student in the junior year at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Prior to the award, Chad received critical recognition as a Dean’s Scholar, Honors College student, and College of Engineering scholar. Take a listen to his BEYA acceptance speech on Facebook.

“I had the honor of receiving a Student Academic Achievement Award,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “BEYA offered me so many enriching opportunities. Whether it was the awards ceremony, lunch and learns, interviews, or the career fair, I was constantly surrounded by people committed to excellence,” he said.

The BEYA Career Fair links professionals and students and educators. Students attend the job fair to meet top employers, take advantage of resources designed to enhance job search, and get tools for a successful STEM career. Sponsors and exhibitors have opportunities to enhance their visibility in the STEM community and recruit new hires. Overall, the conference program had more than 100 presentations, surrounding various tracks including data science, product management, software engineering, and workforce topics.

Also joining the ranks of Student Leaders at BEYA 2020 was DeAndria Moss, a senior at Grambling State University majoring in mathematics and physics as well as chemistry.

The list can’t be complete without Tierra Ferbee who has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is a sophomore at North Carolina Central University, majoring in computer science and business with a focus on information and communications technology.

Hosted by Black Engineer magazine, the Council of Historically Black College and University Engineering Deans, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Aerotek, the BEYA STEM Conference took place Feb. 13-15, at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC.
