Many graduates with Ph.Ds in engineering work as university professors or researchers in laboratories. Dorian Newton, the 2020 Educational Leadership-Corporate Promotion of Education Award winner at the 2020 BEYA STEM Conference, earned an Eng.D.

With this professional doctorate, Dr. Newton works to develop specialized skills for practical application in the engineering workforce.

Newton is director of technical services at Huntington Ingalls Industries, America’s largest military shipbuilding company and a provider of professional services to partners in government and industry.

He has more than 25 years of military and civilian service in operations, testing, engineering, training, quality assurance, and program management while actively building, designing and maintaining a variety of Naval Nuclear-Powered vessels and multiple sites within the Department of Energy Complex.

Throughout his career, his devotion to his craft, the promotion of scientific and technical education programs, and the creation of career pathways that provide minorities opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers have helped to shape, promote and propel Huntington Ingalls Industries successfully into new and challenging markets.

“The concept of stewardship has driven me throughout my life and career. Stewards manage the possessions of others and are accountable for how they administer everything they’ve been given. I’m determined to be a good steward,” Newton said at the BEYA Gala in February.

“Through the promotion of scientific and technical education programs and by creating career pathways providing minorities opportunities in STEM careers, I am blessed to be able to put my belief into practice every day on behalf of HII, making an impact and creating long-term benefits in the communities we serve. The encouragement from my wife, mother, other family members, friends, and colleagues has made me believe anything is possible,” he said.
