This spring, more than 300 students and coaches from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) took part in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge championship, a top competition for HBCUs. More than 45 colleges were represented, hailing from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

“For 30 years, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge has provided high-achieving HBCU students the opportunity to advance their dreams,” said Steve Morikawa, vice president of corporate relations and social responsibility at American Honda. “This is an event that Honda feels passionately about, with many of our associates volunteering each year to help make it happen.”

The program highlights students’ academic talents and ability to answer questions about science, literature, religion, the arts, and pop culture. Outside of gameplay, students participate in community service and are provided with leadership, networking and mentorship opportunities.

At the 30th annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) National Championship Tournament in California, the 2019 championship went to Spelman College, plus a $75,000 institutional grant. Each year HCASC awards $350,000 in institutional grants to participating HBCUs.

Registration for the 2020 academic competition between students at America’s HBCUs opened November 1, 2019, and round-robin games are already underway.

Since 1989, the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge national quiz Championship has donated more than $9 million in grants to participating HBCUs to fund scholarships, student development initiatives, endowment and development campaigns, as well as facilities and equipment. The Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB), which has been held since 2003, has provided eight top HBCU marching bands with a once‐in‐a‐lifetime opportunity to deliver a dynamic performance on a national stage.
