The 2020 BEYA STEM Conference ran from February 13-15 but job-related celebrations continue.  Christine Routzahn, director of the career center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), sent in an upbeat wrap-up. From the opportunity to promote UMBC’s flagship science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program to students who landed jobs and internships with Boston Scientific, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin, and more.

“On behalf of UMBC and our teams, we wanted to extend our sincere appreciation. The BEYA STEM Career Fair & Conference was superb,” wrote Routzahn in an email.

“Thank you for providing our students with an opportunity to connect with so many leading organizations for intern and full-time opportunities,” she continued. “Along with allowing us to promote UMBC and the Meyerhoff Scholars Program to those entering the STEM pipeline.”

The career center director also shared comments from UMBC students. The group included chemical engineering, computer science, and mechanical engineering majors. One student did the rounds at the BEYA Career Fair. On the first day, the information systems major spoke to hiring teams from Lockheed Martin, IBM, Oracle, Deloitte, NetApp, Fund2Foundation, Morgan Stanley, and Lockheed Martin,

“I attended the Career Fair last year but this year was different,” wrote Chukwukamara Ossai, who is majoring in chemical engineering. “I wanted to get the full experience so I attended both days of the career fair and it reaped a totally different outcome. I am very grateful to everyone who took the time to speak with me as a candidate. Almost every recruiter I crossed paths with left a lasting impact on me as a job seeker. I left BEYA 2020 feeling both accomplished and eager to make some changes.”

Asavari Arunrao Deokar, a computer science major, got an internship offer at Boston Scientific.  So did Shivani Birmal,  who is also majoring in computer science.

“I had an opportunity to talk with multiple employers, which helped me secure a mechanical engineering internship offer with Northop Grumman for this coming summer, ” said Joe Fleming, a mechanical engineering major.

“Having experience as an IT Governance, Risk and Compliance Summer 2019 intern at Symantec in Mountain View, CA gave me a better perspective on what career field I was looking to work in when interacting with recruiters at the fair,” Akehnji AchiriMofor noted.  On the career fair floor, the Information Systems student networked with recruiters and employees from Lockheed Martin, IBM, Oracle, Deloitte, NetApp, Fund2Foundation, Morgan Stanley, and more.

“From meeting the right person at Lockheed Martin, I was invited to come back to the conference later that night for a private networking event. This event was a success as I landed an interview the following day. The interview was great and I hope to share that success story shortly! I am extremely grateful to the organizers and sponsors of BEYA for making this conference possible for students like me.”

More than 570 UMBC students and alumni registered for the 2020 BEYA STEM Career Fair & Conference.
UMBC students in the group photo were a few of the undergrads who landed internships at the 2018 BEYA STEM Conference Job Fair.

Information systems major Oluwakayode Akinrinade was offered a software engineering internship with Leidos, one of the largest defense security contractors in America. A cyber scholar, Akinrinade expected to graduate in 2019. Economics major Devaughn Davis got a spot at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond in Virginia to serve as a payment/research management support intern.

The UMBC Career Center’s vision is to empower its more than 13,000 students to create their own success stories.

In total, more than 4,600 students were at the BEYA Job Fair, with college seniors making up at least 35 percent.
