Some of the largest industries in American manufacturing had the biggest hiring increases in June.

According to the July 2018 LinkedIn Workforce Report,  gross hiring in the U.S. was 10.5% higher than in June 2017 across all industries.

The LinkedIn hiring rate is a percentage of LinkedIn members who changed the name of their employer the same month they began their new job, divided by the number of LinkedIn members.

The total number of workers in the U.S. who have LinkedIn profiles is 149 million.

In addition, the business and employment-oriented service says over 20,000 companies in the U.S. use LinkedIn to recruit and more than 3 million jobs are posted on LinkedIn in the U.S. every month.

Hiring on LinkedIn by industry shows the biggest increases in June were aerospace, automotive,  transportation, architecture and engineering, manufacturing,  industrial process controls and automation technologies.

    • Aerospace, automotive, and transportation (15.6% higher)
    • Architecture and engineering (12.5% higher)
    • Manufacturing and industrial (10.9% higher)

The future of U.S. manufacturing is based on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills and education.

The monthly LinkedIn Workforce Report provides insights into skills gaps nationally, and trends in 20 of the largest U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth,  Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C.

Across the 100 biggest U.S. cities, telecommunications skills—which include expertise in mobile devices, wireless technologies, and audiovisual systems— have a national surplus of more than 23,000 people.

Although national hiring was down 7.9% in June from May 2018, employment was still very robust by the standards of the current economic expansion, the report said.
