US Black Engineer magazine invites you to attend the 2nd annual BEYA Leading Voices Summit, which will take place on July 28 on the STEM City USA and BEYA STEM DTX platforms. The summit will feature vice presidents of research and continue the conversation about the representation of minorities in research. To register, please click here.

The theme of the BEYA Leading Voices Summit will focus on partnerships between historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and tech companies and other institutions to drive innovation and promote diverse and inclusive research ecosystems.

During one of the sessions, there will be a discussion on the importance of authentic partnerships between Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and HBCUs in advancing national research and STEM participation. The seminar will emphasize the economic impact of HBCUs, the high number of STEM graduates from these institutions, and the key factors that lead to successful collaborations.

A 2023 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that PWIs can improve support for Black students by adopting best practices from HBCUs. HBCUs have a graduation rate of 32% for Black students compared to 44% at other institutions. However, when compared to similar non-HBCUs, Black students at HBCUs are 33% more likely to graduate.

Distinguished speakers for the event include Dr. Wayne Gersie, vice president for diversity and inclusion at Michigan Technological University, who has extensive experience in driving diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging initiatives, and Dr. Isaac Porche, the National Security Analysis mission area executive at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

The 2023 BEYA Leading Voices Summer Seminar Series will also feature discussions about the CHIPS and Science Act. This act establishes funding for the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) for America Fund and Defense Fund, which aims to encourage the production of semiconductors in the United States and carry out the National Network for Microelectronics Research and Development.  The session will be moderated by Dr. Victor McCrary, vice president for research at the University of the District of Columbia.

The one-day summit will occur virtually through the BEYA (Digital Twin Experience) and STEM City USA platforms, providing an interactive environment for attendees to connect with the speakers.
